Day 21 - Memphis Tour including Sun Records

By:  Trecia and Erv Attebury - Adventure 3

Today we took a bus tour of Memphis, TN.  We set out at 8:00 and those of you who know us will know that we didn’t wake up until we got out in Overton Park.  Our tour guide, Dee, took us to the amphitheater Levitt Shell where Elvis first performed.   Then we drove through some streets of downtown.

We stopped at St. Jude’s research hospital and went into the pavilion of Danny Thomas who was the founder of the hospital for very sick children.  The percentage of survival of these kids has grown dramatically from 4% to 94% since 1961 when St Jude’s started.

After the hospital, we went back downtown to the Peabody Hotel to watch the parade of the ducks to the fountain.  It was cute.  The ducks don’t so much march as much as run to the water.  They come down at 11:00 am and go back up to their house at 5:00 pm.  We went up to the roof to see their “house.”

We went to lunch at the Arcade Restaurant for lunch.  This is Memphis’ oldest café and has been placed on the national register of historic places, established in 1919.  We had a choice of Greek Chicken, meatloaf, and a club sandwich.  We had the chicken and it was yummy.  People told us that the meatloaf was good as well.  The sandwich looked really good too.  But the dessert of peach cobbler was terrific.

After lunch we went over to the Lorraine Motel to view where Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated.  It is now a museum for civil rights.  We drove around Memphis some more and learned everything one would want to know about the city and more.  We drove along Riverside Drive, and we could see I 55 from there and the lower case m that makes up the bridge from Arkansas across the Mississippi.

The best part of the trip for us was the tour of Sun Records.  Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash among others had their start recording there.  Our guide, Jason, was so enthusiastic about the subject that we had a great tour.  At the end of our tour our guide brought out the mike that was used back in the 50’s.  Ira was convinced by all of us to pretend to be recording a song using it.   We got back to the campground about 5:15.  We were tired, but had a good day.
