Marsha and Dick Marshall - Adventure 12

Today was a travel day and started off as all travel days normally do: thump thump thump by our thumping tail gunner. Spence already saved us once with his checks.

The day didn’t start too well for Jeff and Noreen as one of their levelers would not retract. It looked as if a whole bunch of helpers were there trying to resolve the problem. A gentleman I believe was from the campground finally was able to get it to retract but said that one of the bolts was sheared. It was suggested that Jeff contact a service center in Iowa that does a super job in restoring troublesome levelers.

Then came the bittersweet part of the day: Juanita and Ron, owners of Adventure Caravans who had been with us since Bemidji, would be staying behind to join the second GRR trip. We’ll sure miss them as they are a barrel of fun. Hopefully Ron will find something to do with his zippers. For those who don’t know the story of the zippers feel free to ask us.

We spent the next few hours following the Great River Road along the Mississippi River. There probably was a more direct route but we would not have gotten to see towns such as Boston, Montpelier, Burlington, Buffalo and other towns with New England and New York names. It almost made us feel as if we were back north, especially with the beautiful color on some of the trees.

We stopped in Fort Madison, Mo, with Lola and Fred (15) to have lunch. It was a lovely park with plenty of room for our rigs. We made lunch and took it to a picnic table alongside of the river where we joined a couple already there. They were asking us all kinds of questions about the caravan and seemed genuinely interested when they are finally able to retire.

After lunch we continued following the GRR and passed through cornfields, soybean fields that had been harvested, more cornfields both standing and cut and soybean fields that looked as if they were a second planting as they were nice and green.

One of the highlights (?) of the trip was passing two operating casinos:  Catfish Bend Casino and the Terribles as we approached Hannibal. You can’t prove it by us that there is a recession as both parking lots were full of cars. Guess that some of those folks figure that they can hit it big and solve some of their problems. We passed by!!

We arrived at the Mark Twain Cave Campground in Hannibal, MO, and quickly set about getting the rig all set up as we didn’t want to be late for the 5 o’clock social. Dick’s favorite goody was Sally’s cream cheese with jalapeno jelly. He was not alone in partaking of that. Everyone had a nice social hour and then headed off for suppertime.
